Airguide Marine Compass I bought from eBay

I just got a compass I bought in the mail today. This is another one of those cases of misjudging the size of items on eBay. I actually like this compass and believe it will work very well. It is a new, old stock from the original box. The box looks like it is from the 1960’s but the compass looks brand new and never mounted. There is not a scratch on this thing and seems to point really well. It is a little big for my boat. Look at the photo below. I placed a lighter next to it for a little reference.

I mostly sail in familiar waters, so I don’t usually need a compass. When I need one, I take out my handy Nav Board. It’s a piece of plywood, cut to the same size as my lower hatchboard, and it has a depth sounder, compass, and GPS mount on it. Very handy. I rarely need any of those instruments, but when I’m in unfamiliar waters I have my Nav Board at hand, and I’m set.

I recommend this approach, since you bought a large, bracket-mounted compass. That compass will be in the way most of the time. When in familiar waters, you’ll hardly need it.

I mounted this compass on the top of the sliding hatch so its pretty much out of the way. I will post some photos later. I dont really use it for navigational purposes. mostly I use it for tacking upwind so i can tell where i need to be pointed after each tack. it also helps with sail trim to know the degrees of each tack…
